4th May, the day that the Dutch observe Remembrance Day so I guess it was quite a heavy-hearted trip for us when we took a 3 hour bus ride from Graz to Mauthausen.
The gate to the concentration camp, where the eagle was the first to be ripped off when it was liberated.
The quarry, which was one of the main reasons why the Nazis chose to make Mauthausen a concentration camp. Stories from the camp are haunting to say the least.
The book of names of the tragic innocents who were forced to work in this concentration camp.
In Remembrance of the 40 Dutch and 7 British soldiers who were forced to push each other down (on 6th and 7th September 1944) the quarry earlier having risked themselves days earlier.
An emotionally draining day learning about Mauthausen, so the least we could do was smile for the camera.
